SunPower’s 579 MW Antelope Valley Solar Projects Acquired by MidAmerican Solar

Today, MidAmerican Solar, a subsidiary of MidAmerican Renewables, and SunPower Corp. announced MidAmerican Solar's acquisition from SunPower of the 579-megawatt Antelope Valley Solar Projects (AVSP), two co-located projects in Kern and Los Angeles Counties in Calif. Together, the two combined projects will form the largest permitted solar photovoltaic power development in the world and will create an estimated 650 jobs during construction.

Algal Fuel Producers Now Eligible for Tax Credit

As part of the bi-partisan "Fiscal Cliff" legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate on January 1, 2013, algae-derived fuels are, for the first time ever, a "qualified feedstock" under section 40 of the United States Code meaning that producers of algal fuel are eligible for a $1.01 per gallon tax credit.

Study Determines Natural Equilibrium Sea Level for CO2 Concentrations

By comparing reconstructions of atmospheric CO2 concentrations and sea level over the past 40 million years, researchers based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton have found that greenhouse gas concentrations similar to the present (almost 400 parts per million) were systematically associated with sea levels at least nine metres above current levels.

Study Examines Probability of Preventing Rise of Average Global Temperatures

The new study, published today in the journal Nature, examined the probability of keeping average global temperatures from rising more than 2°C above preindustrial levels under varying levels of climate policy stringency, and thus mitigation costs. In addition, the study for the first time quantified and ranked the uncertainties associated with efforts to mitigate climate change, including questions about the climate itself, uncertainties related to future technologies and energy demand, and political uncertainties as to when action will be taken.

The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment, today announced his intention to propose an amendment to the Renewable Fuels Regulations that would see a permanent national exemption from the 2% renewable content requirement in home heating oil, as well as a 6-month extension to the exemption from the 2% renewable content requirement for diesel fuel for Canada's Maritime Provinces.
