The Solar Grand Plan

Vasilis Fthenakis, head of the National Photovoltaic Environmental Research Center at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, will give a talk titled "Solar Grand Plan" at the Laboratory's Berkner Hall on Monday, April 21, at noon. Part of an Earth Day celebration, the talk is free and open to the public. Visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and older must bring a photo ID.

Zero-Emission Vehicles Can Avoid Health Costs From Deaths and Illnesses

According to a study sponsored by the American Lung Association of California, $142 billion in human health and global warming reduction benefits would result from converting the entire California motor vehicle fleet from gasoline vehicles to zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) technologies in the 2010-2030 timeframe, or $96 billion more than relying on the lowest emitting gasoline technologies.

Dye-Sensitised Solar Cells - A Cheap Alternative to Silicon Solar Cells

A cheap alternative to silicon solar cells can be found in dye-sensitised solar cells. This type of cell imitates the natural conversion of sunlight into energy by, for instance, plants and light-sensitive bacteria. Annemarie Huijser has succeeded in substantially improving a process in this type of solar cell, which is similar to Gratzel cells. Huijser will receive her PhD on this subject from TU Delft on Tuesday 25 March.
