Emcore Supplies Concentrating Photovoltaic Systems for Alternative Energy Projects in South Korea

EMCORE Corporation, a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components and subsystems for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite, and terrestrial solar power markets, announced today that it has received a purchase order to supply 5.7 Megawatts (MW) of EMCORE's Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) systems for alternative energy projects in South Korea, along with a letter of intent for follow-on projects of 14.3 MW, expected to be released within the next 6 months.

New Class of Catalysts Improves Performance of Fuel Cells

Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy¡¦s Brookhaven National Laboratory have unveiled important details about a class of catalysts that could help improve the performance of fuel cells. With the goal of producing ¡§clean¡¨ hydrogen for fuel cell reactions in mind, the researchers determined why two next-generation catalysts including gold, cerium, titanium, and oxygen nanomaterials exhibit very high activity. Their results will be published online in the December 14, 2007, edition of the journal Science.

Carbon Emissions Fatal to Coral Reefs

Carbon emissions from human activities are not just heating up the globe, they are changing the ocean¡¦s chemistry. This could soon be fatal to coral reefs, which are havens for marine biodiversity and underpin the economies of many coastal communities. Scientists from the Carnegie Institution¡¦s Department of Global Ecology have calculated that if current carbon dioxide emission trends continue, by mid-century 98% of present-day reef habitats will be bathed in water too acidic for reef growth. Among the first victims will be Australia¡¦s Great Barrier Reef, the world¡¦s largest organic structure.

Distribution Agreement Between VIASPACE and Japanese Company for Humidity Sensor in Gas Fuel Cells

VIASPACE Inc. announced that Tokai Bussan Co., Ltd. of Nagoya, Japan and VIASPACE have signed a distribution contract under their broad teaming agreement of March 2007 for VIASPACE Energy's line of test equipment. Tokai Bussan has placed its initial order for the HS-1000 VIASENSOR, a laser based, humidity sensor for gas fuel cells. Tokai Bussan's initial focus will be immediate sales to large manufacturers of fuel cells and fuel cell test stations, as well as research of the needs of major automobile corporations in Japan.
