The Markham Town of Ontario has given a $1.5-million (CAD) agreement to Carmanah Technologies Corp. for supplying, commissioning and installing a 250 kW solar PV grid-tie system. This system is likely to be erected on the Emergency Operation Centre of the Town.
This project is currently being financed by the capital budget money of Markham as well as the stimulus funds offered by means of a funding alliance with the Canadian and Ontario governments. The novel solar PV grid-tie system, once operational, will produce revenue by means of the sale of power from the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) through the Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) program. From the revenue generated by the system, Markham will make payments for its capital budget investment. This new system will support the commitment of Markham to sustainable technology and renewable energies.
Carmanah Technologies was selected for this project over four competing companies. Graham Seaman, Manager of Climate Change and Energy of Markham, stated that Carmanah Technologies was chosen based on its rich experience in commercial-scale rooftop solar grid-tie system installations. Already, Markham is home to the headquarters of companies such as Avaya, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Apple, Toshiba, Lucent and Motorola.
