Aveda Institute Corpus Christi (AICC) has proclaimed that it has installed its own and the first 60’ Skystream 3.7 wind turbine at its institute on the north side of La Palmera shopping mall. It is the first of its kind to be installed in a U.S. mall.
Aveda is determined to offer an environmentally and socially conscious educational institute. This institute plans to open on 9th November, with an impressive opening ceremony between the 12th and 14th of November.
The initial work on the installation has commenced. The wind power which is to be supplied by the turbine and four kinetic-to-direct connect exercise machines will boost the power supply eliminating the usage of non-renewable energy fuels. The fitness machines would be accessible to the shoppers in the mall during the mall hours at the upper level of the Aveda Institute. The Institute would offer discounts for every 30 minute workout, which would add 50-Watt hours of carbon-free, clean electricity to Aveda’s power supply. A laptop could also be powered by a 30 minute workout on either the treadmill or elliptical machines.
According to Chase Thalman, AICC’s Director of Operations, the two important universal notions at present are ‘going green’ and ‘getting fit’. Aveda with this installation in Corpus Christi echoes the same.
The exercise machines fitted in are, three PreCor EFX556i Experience elliptical machines, and one Woodway EcoMill treadmill, which would utilize nil electricity and send all the energy generated directly to the AICC grid, through the ReRev retrofit done on the machines. ReRev, which is a division of SunQuest Energy, located in Clearwater Florida, retrofits cardio machines, and stores human Kinetic Energy from workouts, and changes it to electricity.
Thalman commented that there could be no better place than Corpus Christi in Texas, for bringing together wind and human power. He said that they wanted to thank Trademark Property and La Palmera, for their efforts to bring alternate energy to the forefront. La Palmera was chosen because it was LEED pre-certified, and was also going in for Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
According to Terry Montesi, Chairman and CEO of Trademark Properties, the company was determined to enhance communities and lives, through greener building and operating practices, and hence was appreciative of Aveda’s efforts, in integrating these ground-breaking technologies of energy production.
