Carmanah Technologies, a leading solar technology company, has been chosen by the City of Los Angeles for illuminating a popular bicycle path with the company’s EverGEN 1710 solar powered lights.
The EverGEN 1710’s customizable operating profiles proved to be the decisive factor while choosing it as it would permit the City to provide lighting on the bike path when people were using it in real-time. The project is estimated to cost $500,000 USD.
Prior to this, the bike path was illuminated utilizing the conventional AC HID fixtures, which were grid powered. Due to the frequent theft of the copper fixtures, the trail was more often in the dark, than lighted up. The Los Angeles City Officials wanted to provide lighting without undergoing the hassle of having to replace the copper wires every now and then. After working closely with Carmanah and the local agent for lighting, David Silverman, the City Officials have finally decided that solar powered lights were perfect for lighting up the bike trail. Kerney Marine, Project Manager for the Los Angeles City, remarked that the Carmanah EverGEN lights were ideal for the city’s requirements. The system not only meets the specifications set out by the IES but also proves to be theft resistant, as its integrated design includes all the batteries, solar panels, electronics and luminaire at the top. She further mentioned that they would use an assorted range of operating profiles all through the complete stretch of the trial path, so that lighting was available for the people as and when they needed it.
According to Ted Lattimore, Carmanah’s CEO, the city has always been a pioneer, using energy efficient lighting systems as seen by the usage of hardwired LED lights. With this initiative they would go solar and expand the city’s green realm.
