Wind Works Power and REpower Systems have inked a definitive agreement for the supply and deployment of 25 wind turbines of the MM92 type, suitable for cold climates.
The turbines will be installed at five wind farms in Ontario, namely, Snowy Ridge, Settlers Landing, Grey Highlands, Clean Breeze, and Cloudy Ridge. The turbines will have a capacity of 50MW in total. Apart from providing clean energy, the wind farm building and maintenance will create some new on-site job opportunities.
The wind turbines will each have a 2MW output and their hub height will be 100 m. The turbines are due for delivery in 2013 spring and will be functional from 2013 summer. A month back, REpower had planned to supply 15 wind turbines for Wind Works projects across Ontario. REpower’s CEO, Andreas Nauen said that the MM92’s Cold Climate version is suitable for localities that experience damp weather and major fluctuations in temperature.
Canadian Wind Energy Association estimates that each 100 MW new capacity generates $300,000 for rural landowners in yearly lease payments and $3.5 million every year in operation and maintenance opportunities. With the same 100 MW capacity, municipalities can create $300,000 of tax revenue and 33 full-time jobs in rural areas. The Ontario Power Authority has awarded all the five wind farms with a feed-in tariff power purchase agreement, which was initiated by the Green Energy and Green Economy Act 2009 and warrant a definite pricing model for supply of green energy.
