The National Society of Energy Scholars(R) announced today that 21 students from River Hill High School have been elected to membership at a special graduation ceremony. Upon graduation, the National Energy Scholars(R) will continue to transform their communities, one home at a time.
Ms. Susan D. Lower, sponsoring teacher at the River Hill High School said in her opening remarks, "We are so very proud of these exceptional scholars. Our community benefits from the increased energy and environmental awareness among citizens through the efforts of these students, our teachers, and other school groups."
Ms. Amy Chiang, Director, International Affairs, Office of Energy Efficiency of the U.S. Department of Energy said in her keynote address, "Increasing energy awareness and encouraging energy stewardship at the personal, family and community levels is the quickest, most economical, and the cleanest way to bring about social change and increased energy productivity. Energy Efficiency must be the first fuel of choice for every American Citizen!" She added, "I am very proud of the accomplishments of these young adults."
"Today I salute the achievements of our talented National Energy scholars. Their personal energy stewardship and community leadership has resulted in the completion of over 160 home energy audits," said, Mr. C.P. Shankar, chairman, National Society of Energy Scholars. "In the true American spirit, they rolled up their sleeves and helped serve the members of their community. Our innovative education program empowers students to learn practical and permanent ways to take ownership and responsibility for their personal energy use and help reduce adverse effects of climate change in their communities."
Mr. Robert Yundt, President, National Society of Energy Scholars said in his concluding remarks, "While fear and guilt have often been used as traditional tools to increase awareness, these National Energy scholars are learning through their peers how to make informed choices in their daily lives. We are delighted that these next generation energy users are actually doing what they are learning. Our goal is to complete over 18 million home energy audits within the next 5 years."
