KCI Technologies Inc., a multi-disciplined engineering firm with offices in the Northeast, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, has moved its Hunt Valley, Md., headquarters to a new green building located at the Highlands Office Park in Sparks. The move aligns the firm with its strategic goals for growth and sustainable business operations. The new address is 936 Ridgebrook Road, Sparks, MD 21152.
In 2009, KCI will pursue a U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for the four-story facility, which uses resources more efficiently than traditional office buildings and offers employees a healthier and more comfortable work environment.
"The move to a green building is the first in a series of steps as part of our increasing commitment to sustainable operations," said KCI Chairman and CEO Terry F. Neimeyer, PE. "We will continue to support and expand our green design practices, as well as implement strategic planning initiatives that reduce our carbon footprint."
Ranked the second largest Baltimore-area engineering firm by the Baltimore Business Journal, KCI employs engineers, environmental scientists, surveyors, planners and construction professionals. Its own engineers and LEED experts contributed to the design of the green building.
The facility features high-performance climate control, plumbing and electrical systems; a white solar reflective roof; and water-efficient landscaping. Materials selection was critical, with at least 20 percent purchased from local manufacturers and 50 percent of the wood-based materials built with products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Green-label carpet and low-emitting paints and stains were selected to ensure good indoor air quality. Materials used for cubicles, countertops and other office features contain recycled content.
More than 550 employee-owners work out of the Sparks building. In addition to the green features, the new facility offers employees more space, more natural light, and other amenities, including a fitness center and locker rooms.
