Plans for the construction of a 1.1 Megawatt solar array was announced by the Dayton Power and Light Company. The company is planning to carry out this construction near its Yankee substation in Washington Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. The construction process will begin in December, 2009 and is expected to be completed in March 2010.
After completion, this facility will hold 9,000 solar panels constructed over 7 acres. The facility is expected to generate sufficient electricity to supply power to about 150 homes. The estimated cost for this project is $5 million.
As part of the installation, a visitor center will also be developed in this facility to provide the public with knowledge about solar power. A solar array will hold a number of interconnected solar cells, which converts solar energy from the sun into electrical current.
The construction of this Yankee solar facility will be executed in collaboration with many regional companies headed by Ameridian Specialty Services of Cincinnati. These companies include: Inovateus Solar of South Bend, Indiana, ESI Electric of Dayton, Miller Valentine Commercial Construction of Dayton and Square D/Schneider Electric of West Chester.
An earlier announcement from Dayton Power and Light Company stated that the company would convert turf areas at its substations into prairie grass to demonstrate its commitment to the environment. The company in the year 2002 processed 70 acres all over the Miami Valley to carry out the prairie planting process. At present, 35 acres have been planted in Greene, Montgomery and Darke counties. This new landscape helps in providing a buffer between Dayton Power and Light Company’s equipment and adjacent properties along with reductions in emissions and noise.
