Suntech Power Holdings, the biggest producer of crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels in the world, has been selected to provide solar modules for a potential largest solar energy plant in Taiwan. The 4.7-MW solar power plant is located in Young'an, Kaohsiung. Taiwan Power Company owns the solar plant and is developed by Fortune Electric Co., Ltd. Currently, the installed solar capacity in Taiwan is approximately 5 MW and with the addition of this new facility, the Island’s installed capacity will be nearly doubled.
Vice President of Fortune Electric, Liao Wen Sing, said the Suntech panels were chosen for their superior performance as proven in utility-scale installations throughout Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The company is looking forward to be working with Suntech on this important large-scale solar project.
Each advanced polycrystalline module will have up to 280 watts peak power output and 16,640 of these solar modules will be delivered for the project. The delivery of the modules will commence in June 2010. The project is scheduled to commence operations in early 2011. The project marks an important milestone in Taiwan’s attempts to increase the renewable power production capacity by over 10 GW during the next 20 years, decrease its dependence on imported fossil fuels, and as well as to diminish carbon dioxide emissions to 2000 year levels by 2025. Endowed with ample sunlight, solar power is expected to contribute a significant share of Taiwan's future energy portfolio.
