Alcatel-Lucent Honored with European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Award

The Sustainable Energy Europe (SEE) campaign for 2010 nominated Alcatel-Lucent as the winner of the European Commission’s annual competition in the category of “Market Transformation-Voluntary Commitments”. The company received the award for its “Alternative Energy Program for Global Green Telecommunications” on 23 March during the European Union’s Sustainable Energy week.

The Alcatel-Lucent Alternative Energy Laboratory and Pilot Station is the first facility of its kind providing possibilities of testing, analysis, and validation in the alternative energy sector that could bring about revolutionary changes in the telecommunications industry. Alcatel-Lucent aims to construct wireless telecommunication networks that will enable access to broadband and telephone services even in remote areas. Existing connections will also be presented with alternative renewable energy options to reconfigure their networks. The use of wind, solar and fuel cells in the power stations will cut carbon content by 7 million tons per year, and it is estimated that this green alternative to the technology will cater to at least 100,000 mobile stations in the period 2010–2012.

Alcatel-Lucent’s Sustainable Power program offers tailor-made solutions from designing to integration and installation to its telecom clients. It will also provide up-to-date guidelines so that vendors can choose between the best alternative energy options as soon as the technology is available in the market. This technical merger between the energy and telecommunications industries will be a major step in the development of a more dynamic and efficient global network system.
