Resolute Forest Products Plans to Build Industrial Wood Pellet Plant in Thunder Bay, Ontario

Resolute Forest Products today announced plans to build an industrial wood pellet plant that will convert a currently underutilized residual material into a reliable source of renewable energy. Construction of the plant is expected to begin shortly and is scheduled for completion in 2014. The Company has signed a ten-year agreement to supply Ontario Power Generation with 45,000 metric tons of pellets annually.

Polish Church Installs Canadian Solar Modules for Rooftop PV System

Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company" or "Canadian Solar"), one of the world's largest solar companies, delivered solar modules for an exceptional solar project in Poland. On the roof of a catholic church in Skoczow-Pogorze in Upper Silesia, the Polish project developer, RenSan Energy, implemented a PV-system in less than three weeks with a total performance of 37 kW. This makes the church a solar pioneer in the region and of the still young Polish solar market, using the self-produced energy of the sun, amongst other sources, to cover its electricity needs.

Simultaneous Precipitation Reduces Amount of Phosphorus in Wastewater

Researchers at Aalto University have developed a simple method for reducing the amount of phosphorus in the wastewater of a pulp mill. The method is called simultaneous precipitation using iron sulphate. A separate treatment stage is not required, as the precipitation takes place simultaneously with the actual biological wastewater treatment.

Multiple Factors Influence Hummingbirds’ Selection of Downward-Facing Flowers

How flowers have evolved particular colours, shapes and scents to attract pollinators has long fascinated ecologists. Now, using artificial flowers and high-speed video, researchers have gained intriguing insights into the intimate relationship between hummingbirds and the flowers they pollinate. The study, published in the British Ecological Society's journal Functional Ecology, is the first to measure how much energy hummingbirds use while hovering to feed from flowers of different orientation.
